Let’s Go Plant a Tree!

I LOVE TREES! don’t you? apart from providing us with Oxygen to breathe, Food to eat, Fuel to keep us warm, Building materials to house us and fertilizing the soil when their leaves and wood rot, they are absolutely beautiful!

Where would we be without trees? Thankfully the coalition government have done a U-turn on their plans to sell off vast tracts of ancient woodland to the highest bidder (although 15% of the UKs woodland is still up for grabs), but it’s vital that we sustain woodland habitats, and even expand them if we are to achieve any kind of lasting harmony with our Landbase.

A government fund has been set up to give financial assistance to groups wishing to plant trees, the text below is taken from the website: http://thebigtreeplant.direct.gov.uk

The Big Tree Plant funding

From April 2011, £4.2m will be available to support community groups to plant trees in towns, cities and residential areas throughout England.

The Big Tree Plant

The funding is for community and civic groups, or other non-profit organisations to establish community-led tree planting projects in areas that would benefit most.

The trees must be planted in streets or in green places that are open to all to visit or where local people will benefit from them. Whoever owns the land must give permission and support to the project, and there must be a plan to care for trees after they are planted.

Groups working in areas where more trees would help to improve residents’ quality of life are strongly encouraged to apply for the funding.
