Transport
This Transition Working Group is in need of input. If you would like to help this group in meeting the challenges of transport in a Transition Town please contact us
What is Transition Transport?
Transport covers all forms of getting from A to B. As we transit from high-usage fuel transport to low-usage we had better look at ways of meeting our travel needs in effective but less costly ways.
If you’re sufficiently healthy you might want to start cycling. There is a Hereford cycling club & there are online guides where you can learn the necessary skills to maintain your bike, or you can pay an expert to do the work for you. It’s also worth considering replacing your tyres with Greentyres. These are tyres without air! no punctures! no pumping! less waste!
Our public transport network is currently under threat from the proposed cuts. Buses form an important link for people that live in the countryside, have no other means of transport, elderly people and students. We have seen how the once regular bus service has declined over the years and we stand to lose it even more if we fail to act now. see: http://transitionhereford.x10.mx/wp/?p=484 for more information.
There is also the dying art of hitching. The website www.freewheelers.co.uk is a site where you can request or offer lifts and www.couchsurfing.org is a worldwide scheme where you can find somewhere to stay en-route or share your space for other pilgrims.
Or you could carshare! There is a website called www.twoshare.co.uk or you can search for others in the area. And/or use Bio-power: www.bio-power.co.uk – Bio-power is an alternative to diesel made by recycling renewable/organic materials that would otherwise go to waste. Stay tuned to the Transition Hereford website for details of a Bio-power seminar later this year where you can find out how to save money by making your own Bio-power!
